NBA Breakout Players: Atlanta Hawks

Published on 22 December 2020 at 14:42

The NBA is most exciting when young stars are budding across the league. The talent pool is ridiculous in the Association. Some players are just waiting to sprout into the player they have the potential to be. It is best to take this subject by division since I want to pick a breakout player for every team. The Southeast division teams are the Hornets, Wizards, Hawks, Magic, and Heat. Every team in this division should be better than the year prior. They all, through development or players added in free agency, have bolstered their respective rosters. Fans of these cities should be happy with the direction of their franchises. With some internal growth, playoff hopes should arise or even contention for a title.

Bogdan Bogdanović is one of many new additions to the Hawks roster this off-season. Most casual fans have heard his name and that he is a good shooter. However, not enough people know how great Bogdan has been through his first three seasons. The Phoenix Suns selected him late in the first round of the 2014 draft. He then returned to his home country to finish his overseas career. At age 25, in 2017, Bogdanović made his NBA debut as a rookie for the Kings. In his first three seasons, he averaged 13.5 points per game and has gotten better every year. His best attribute is his deep-range shooting, hitting over 37% on 7+ attempts per game last season. He has been a great player on a non-playoff team, often playing behind Buddy Hield.

This year, Bogdan will be getting similar minutes this year and will work to get open along the perimeter. His backcourt mate Trae Young is known for his deep range and volume scoring but is one of the premier passers in basketball. Trae should find Bogdanović open on the outside five to six times a game. He fits this Hawks system perfectly. With all the options on offense, he will get open more often and could shoot nearly 40% from three this year. I see him taking the same amount of shots and missing less than any other season. Bogdanović will end up a breakout star averaging his career-high in points on the best team he has ever been on.
